Collect 2024

I am delighted to have been selected to exhibit with Design-Nation at Collect International Art Fair at Somerset House, 1st-3rd March 2024.

My profile is featured in Design-Nation’s Collect 2024 showcase:

https://designnationshowcase.co.uk/http-designnationshowcase-co-uk-collect-2024/participants/susan-kinley

I will be showing a new body of work that brings two strands of my practice together, kilnformed glass and enamels on copper. They will reflect my ongoing fascination with the marks, patterns and traces to be found of ancient sites and landscapes, often only visible when viewed from above, in a certain light.

I’m really looking forward to being part of Collect’s 20th anniversary celebrations!

Materials Matter at MAKE Southwest, 4th December 2021 - 13th March 2022

It’s the last few days to catch this exhibition of 10 makers and artists from the Design - Nation Devon and Cornwall group. I am showing a recent series of assembled copper panels, layered with glass enamels to build translucence through several firings. Some contain partly hidden imagery of the stones of ancient sites in Cornwall and Wales. I have been thinking of the pages of illuminated manuscripts, held open in museums at one viewing page. A book can take us to a completely different place or landscape; an opening out of horizons beyond the structure of the page, where scale is changed.

Open Book, 28cm x 41cm, glass enamels, copper, photographic image.

Seeing The Landscape - extended to 2022

I am very pleased to be working with Penwith Landscape Partnership on the Seeing The Landscape project. Next year I will be running family art workshops that celebrate the wonderful landscape of West Cornwall. Over the October half term we had two very enjoyable art walks with small groups of adults and children up to Tregeseal stone circle and holed stones on Truthwall Common, near St Just. In sun, wind, rain and fog some great colour and texture studies were made in the sketchbooks given to all participants.

Modern Creatives - Seasalt Feature

I’m delighted that the Seasalt team came to my studio to interview me for their feature Modern Creatives, focusing on artists and makers in Cornwall. The resulting film, interview and images show my working process and discuss the places I work from, with a focus on the waterjet cut and kilnformed glass wall panels and installations.

Collect Open 2019

I am very pleased to announce that I have been selected to show new work at Collect Open 2019. Curated by the Crafts Council at Saatchi Gallery, London, Collect Open provides a platform for 15 individual artists to show ambitious and conceptual craft led installations. My participation has been supported by a grant from Arts Council England.

I will be showing my new glass wall installation, West South West. Made of waterjet cut and kilnformed Bullseye glass, this new work reflects my research into the Bronze Age landscape of West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Each shaped panel is an individual window into remote and ancient places, recording changes over time.
